Radiant Images Provides 3D Cameras and Gear for Aerial FX and Back Plate Shots in New 3D Action-Adventure Film – Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

journey2PosterRadiant Images, a leading L.A.-based rental house and digital cinema innovator, played an important role in the new 3D action-adventure film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which opened in theaters across the U.S. over the weekend.
Radiant provided SI-2K Mini sensors and Cinedecks for a series of aerial visual effects shots. The sensors were mounted side-by-side along with the Cinedeck on RC helicopters. (Go here for more images.)

Radiant’s SI-2K guru, Babak Mansouri, managed the aerial 3D camera system and served as the film’s DIT and data manager. He was part of a small visual effects crew working in a remote location in Hawaii to produce back plate shots for Cinematographer David Tattersall (Gulliver’s Travels, The Green Mile). Mansouri was in charge of a range of camera setup-related tasks, including lensing.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, shot on location in Oahu, Hawaii, is directed by Brad Peyton and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Kristin Davis.

The sequel to the 2008 film Journey to the Center of the Earth, Journey 2 tells the story of a young man (Hutcherson) who partners with his mom’s boyfriend (Johnson) on a mission to find his grandfather (Caine), who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.
